Our Story

Save Rez Dogs is an indigenous based, nehiyaw sovereign, volunteer, crowd-funded sourced group.

We work towards animal protection and a call to action for First Nation communities to gather resources and develop their own dog management plans.

**** Disclaimer: WE ARE NOT A FRONTLINE RESCUE - We do not pick up dogs. ****
We can link you to rescues in your area if we have the resources.

We are about prevention before intervention.

Founder Leah Arcand from Muskeg Lake Cree Nation, started the hashtag “#saverezdogs” while teaching a lands based program called Miyo Pimatsowin in Thunderchild First Nation in 2016.

We have a clothing and merch line to help spread the message to Save Rez Dogs and have shipped over 2000+ orders across Turtle Island. Portion of the proceeds go to various frontline animal rescues that aid rez dogs and helps us stay afloat!

We have helped over 400+ (lost count) rez dogs/owners/families/communities with emergency situations.

*As of September 2023, we have raised over $12,000 this year & donated out to various frontline rescues. Since 2019 we have raised over $70,000 in total!

Publication in Wunderdog Magazine November 2023: Rez Dogs

Wunderdog is an independent online and print magazine for rescue dogs and their people. It is often called a book because of its volume and in-depth content.

Where are you on the spectrum of allies for rez dogs?

This is subject to change - but we made this inspired by all the discourse we see from all the comments, posts, discussions, and experiences we’ve had.
WE NEED EVERYONE to help rez dogs because they are a huge part of our lives, have major roles in our communities, and everyone wins when rez dogs are living healthy and happy lives.

The goal is to move to the left of the spectrum.
